The Parliaments were a doo-wop quintet from Plainfield, New Jersey, formed in the back room of a barbershop in the late 1950s and named after the cigarette brand. After some early personnel changes their lineup solidified with George Clinton, Ray Davis, Fuzzy Haskins, Calvin Simon, and Grady Thomas. Clinton was group leader and manager, and part owner of the barbershop where the group convened to entertain customers. Modelled after Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers, they recorded for a bunch of small labels in the 60’s. Their biggest hit is “I Wanna Testify” (1967). The group later evolved into the funk bands Parliament and Funkadelic, which found success in the 1970s.

Hello there. As a little girl, the story has been told to me how my father Daniel (JuneBug) Mitchell also sang bass with Parliament in the early days. I am a Funkateer and go to many shows/parties with the Parlimment funkadelic. I go to all of Bernie Worell, George Clinton and Bootsy’s sets. I even saw George at my father’s shop some time ago. Tradewinds downtown Newark, NJ. I would love to be officially part of the family and invited back stage or get a positive pass one time. Can that happen? Smile. “Feet don’t fail me now…”
